About

Foreigners, not residing in Spain and that want to carry out remote work for a company not based in Spain, can apply for an international telework visa, also known as the Spain Digital Nomad Visa, valid for a maximum of one year. Notice that if your work contract is shorter, in this case the visa will have the same validity e.g. 8 months.

The holder of the Spain Digital Nomad Visa can only work for companies established outside the national territory. In case of exercising a professional activity, the Digital nomad or Remote worker will be able to work for a company based in Spain, provided that the percentage of this work does not exceed 20% of the total of his professional activity.

Seventy (70) days before the visa expires, digital nomads and remote workers can exchange their visa for a residence permit, which can last for up to 3 years.

The estimated fees are the following, according to the current fee of Long-Term Visas for Spain:

Americans Fee: $190

Other nationalities Fee: $90.

Canadians and British: Consult in your embassy.

Do digital nomads have to pay tax with the Spain Digital Nomad Visa?*

*Though the information is still to be confirmed, the tax regime might be as follows:

Instead of IRPF (personal income tax), digital nomads will pay IRNR (non-resident income tax). Until now this tax was for those workers who do not stay more than 183 days in Spain, but with the new law it will be easier for them to remain in that tax regime.

So far the IRNR rate for people with an annual income of up to €600,000 was 24%, and it will reduce to 15% for up to four years. From 600,000 onwards, the tax rate is and remains 47%.

Note: Spain Digital Nomad Visa applications will begin later of first quarter of 2023. Information might still be updated by government office.
