Bulgaria does not currently have a digital nomad visa, but digital nomads and freelancers can apply for the Bulgaria Freelance Professionals Visa, also known as a type D visa. 


Any non-EU citizen can work and live as a freelancer in Bulgaria, provided that the respective approval has been given by the Bulgarian employment office. The residence permit for freelancers is for an initial period of 1 year and it is possible to extend it for another year.


The application for the issuance of the long-stay visa is submitted only to the diplomatic and consular representations of the applicant's permanent residence or to the accredited representations in the applicant's state of permanent residence. Persons legally residing in a third country other than their country of permanent residence may exceptionally apply in this third country after having justified their request and if their return to the State of permanent residence is guaranteed. 


The Executive Director of the National Employment Office will make a decision within 30 days of submitting the documents.

  • Be a third-country national or non-EU citizen.
  • The main applicant must be over 18 years of age.
  • Have a good health and a clean criminal record from the country of residence.
  • Show a detailed freelancer plan (assignments included) in Bulgaria.
  • Show evidence of sufficient funds during their stay in Bulgaria.

Which documents do I need to apply for the Bulgaria Freelance Professional Visa?

9 Document Required

  • A photocopy of the last Bulgaria and Schengen visas or visas for the UK and the USA (if any).
  • A full color photograph 3,5х4,5cm against light-colored background.
  • Medical insurance valid for the EU member states for the whole period of the trip, covering all costs for repatriation and for urgent medical care and emergency hospital treatment for the period of the stay indicated in the visa. The insurance amount cannot be less than 30 thousand euros.
  • Evidence of financial means and sufficient to sustain the stay.
  • Copy of the technical passport of the car of the trip.
  • For under-aged children traveling without their parents or trustees, the following documents shall be submitted: A copy of the birth certificate; original and photocopy of a power of attorney notary certified by both parents/ trustees or by one parent trustee that they agree their child to travel unaccompanied by them.
  • Visa application form.
  • Detailed freelancer plan (assignments included) in Bulgaria.
  • Photocopy of the passport first page.
