This is a long-term residence category for persons who invest in, or who are employed in a senior management capacity, within an approved category of business. The category is open to persons already resident in the Cayman Islands and persons wishing to become residents. Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria and are of good character and health will be issued a Residency Certificate (Substantial Business Presence) valid for 25 years (renewable) entitling them to reside in the Cayman Islands and to work in the business(es) in which they have invested or are employed in a senior management capacity.

The following are approved categories of business:

  1. Fund administration
  2. Brokerage services
  3. Investment and fund management services
  4. Financial trading (including foreign exchange, securities and derivatives)
  5. Captive insurance or reinsurance management services
  6. Reinsurance underwriting
  7. Investment banking
  8. Actuarial services
  9. Insurance claims management
  10. Family office
  11. Hedge fund incubation
  12. Any company registered as an exempted company under section 164 of the Companies Law (2011 Revision).

What are eligibility requirements for the Residency Certificate (Substantial Business Presence)?

3 Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant must be, or intend to be, legally and ordinarily resident in the Islands for a minimum of ninety days in each calendar year.
  • Applicant must own, or propose to own, either directly or indirectly, a minimum of ten percent of the shares in an approved category of business in the Islands through which he has established, or will establish, a substantial business presence in the Islands.
  • Applicant must be able to prove to the satisfaction of the Chief Immigration Officer that he is or will be employed in a senior management capacity of an approved category of business in the Cayman Islands.

Which documents do I need to apply for the Residency Certificate (Substantial Business Presence)?

  • Complete application form
  • Cover Letter: Please provide a cover letter addressed to the Chief Immigration Officer explaining the grounds for your application and providing any other information that you consider relevant. Your original signature is required.
  • Fees submission documents.
  • Provide a certified/notarized copy of picture page of passport.
  • Evidence of Health Insurance: Provide details and documentary evidence of adequate health insurance coverage for you and your dependant(s) that is accepted in the Cayman Islands.
  • Provide a police clearance certificate from your home state or place of the last residence for you and any accompanying dependant(s) who are over the age of 18 years old.
  • Provide 1 full-face photograph (passport-size) of the applicant and each dependant who is included on the application.
  • A medical questionnaire that has been completed by yourselves (Part 1) and your physician(s) (Part 2) of application form.
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume.
  • If you are applying as a Business Owner, documents of fund administration, brokerage services, investment and fund management services, investment banking, financial trading (including foreign exchange, securities and derivatives), captive insurance or reinsurance management services, reinsurance underwriting, actuarial services, etc. (are required).
  • If you are applying as a Employed in a Senior Management capacity, you will provide documents of Proof of Employment in senior management capacity in approved business category and a a letter from your employer stating how long you have been employed, in what capacity, and your salary.
  • Provide three written references from persons (not relatives or spouse) who have known you for at least two years. Each reference must be in a sealed envelope, signed across the seal by the referee, with the name of the applicant on the outside.
